Fast food outlets in Victoria will have to display the kilojoule counts of their meals under proposed laws to help people make healthier choices.

The new laws would require food chains with 20 outlets or more across the state, or 50 or more outlets across the country, to display the kilojoule content of food and drink on menus and price tags.

"We think it's important that we confront the significant challenges around the prevalence of things like diabetes and obesity," Health Minister Jill Hennessy told reporters on Thursday.
