Three people including child rescued from surf at popular Victorian beach

Three people including a child have been pulled from rough surf at a Kilcunda beach on Victoria's Bass Coast amid a heatwave sweeping the state.

Paramedics confirmed a teenage girl along with a primary school-aged girl were taken to hospital in a stable condition, while a man in his 40s was airlifted to the Alfred Hospital- in a serious but stable condition.

The rescue comes as much of the state sweats through its hottest day of the summer.

Kilcunda is located between Phillip Island and Wonthaggi, and is about 117 kilometres south-east of Melbourne.

Authorities have been warning Victorians to stay safe around water this summer, following the state's worst drowning tragedy in nearly 20 years.

Four people died on January 24 after swimming at an unpatrolled beach near Phillip Island.

Just weeks earlier, another man died after being swept out to sea while trying to retrieve his sunglasses at Kilcunda Surf Beach.
