Jump in expulsions prompts Vic probe

Children expelled from schools will come under the spotlight of the Victorian Ombudsman after a 25 per cent jump in cases in the past year.

The Department of Education and Training will be investigated after parent complaints to the ombudsman over the expulsions, the appeals process and difficulty finding new schools for their children.

Part of the investigation will look at whether vulnerable and at-risk students are over-represented in expulsion figures, the ombudsman said in a statement on Thursday.
