People in Melbourne are drinking lattes out of avocados after a cafe's joke went viral and whetted the appetites of a few millennials.

Following worldwide media coverage, the clip combining "two of Melbourne's obsessions" has led to customers requesting the "avolatte".

Truman Cafe Albert Park head barista Jaydin Nathan says they've sold four on Monday for the same price as a regular coffee.

"Maybe some people thought it was meant to be a joke but food is meant to be fun, food is meant to be art," he said.

"Some people don't like Heston Blumenthal but I guess it depends (on) which way you look at it."

The cafe published its creation on its Instagram on May 12 before a clip by Middle Park videographer Angelo Katsaros went viral on a food and travel account.

Lick Your Phone's video has clocked up more than 100,000 views and led to news stories in the UK, US and Europe.

Mr Nathan joked if it took off, he might be able to get into the housing market himself.

"Hell yeah, if some people want to give some of their hard-earned cash away to help me with a deposit on a house, that would be great," he said, laughing.
