Job creation legislation a priority: VECCI

Victoria's peak employer group has called for jobs-creating legislation to be passed as a priority.

Reducing red tape and creating jobs for young Victorians must be seen as a step forward, according to the Victorian Employers Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VECCI).

The organisation's chief executive Mark Stone hopes the major parties can resolve their differences so the Back to Work Act can succeed.

"VECCI has consistently supported this important legislation as it will establish a $100 million fund to give payroll tax relief to businesses hiring unemployed youth, the long-term unemployed and retrenched workers into full-time," Mr Stone said.

Employers would be able to claim a rebate up to $1000 to subsidise training, uniform, transport and other costs.

The bill is facing minor resistance from the opposition over reporting requirements while the Greens are unwilling to support the government's attempts to facilitate jobs creation, Mr Stone said.

Attempts by governments to improve job prospects for young people should be debated on merit, not red tape trivia, he said.
