Jakobsson didn't set out to hurt: Lehane

Killing a Melbourne mother-of-two was not on the agenda for an "idiot" who ran her down on a homemade mini-trail bike, a bereaved husband says.

James Lehane says his wife's killer was "extremely reckless" but never meant to hurt her.

Caleb Jakobsson ran down the mother of his two children outside a Carrum Downs shopping centre in September 2015.

"He did not set out that day with intent to hurt or kill my wife," Mr Lehane told radio station 3AW.

"He set out to be an idiot, to show off. What happened would have been the last thing from his mind."

Jakobsson, now 20, was sentenced in the County Court of Victoria on Tuesday to spend at least four years in jail.

Although the family won't appeal against the sentence, Ms Lehane's sister Adele Paraggio wants tougher sentencing in Victoria.

"Unfortunately, it will take another catastrophic case again to perhaps shift up the bar a bit more," she said.

"I don't know what is going to change that if killing my younger sister, who is a mother of two, isn't a catastrophic enough event for tougher sentences to start being handed out around culpable driving and failing to stop.

"I don't think anything would satisfy us."
