Jail expected over Vic grandfather's death

Victorian grandfather Alan Robison had just finished dining with friends when he was hit and killed by a drunk motorcyclist while trying to cross the road.

He was an active 83-year-old, fitter than men half his age and his mind was "sharp as a knife", the Victorian County Court heard on Thursday.

"I am still coming to terms with the fact I won't wake up from this nightmare," Jodie Gibbs told the court and the man responsible for her father's death.

British national Michael Hollands has pleaded guilty to one count of culpable driving causing the death of Mr Robison.

The court heard Hollands, a carpenter, had some drinks after he finished work on February 12 and then went to a pub before heading toward his Abbotsford home on his motorcycle.

He hit Mr Robison after the elderly man left a Chinese restaurant and began crossing Victoria Street.

Hollands stopped and ran back to Mr Robison, telling a witness: "I'm f***ed. I've been drinking".

He later told police: "The guy sort of came out of nowhere".

"It felt like I just clipped the guy," Hollands told investigators.

"It was just bad timing, you know."

An expert believed his blood alcohol content would have been about 0.18 to 0.2 when he hit Mr Robison, who suffered multiple injuries and died in hospital two days later.

Mr Robison had stopped between two parked cars and checked for traffic in both directions, before beginning to cross.

Judge Mark Dean said it was unbelievable Hollands, who will be sentenced on Monday, would drive after drinking so much.

The carpenter has no criminal history and his barrister, John Marquis, said he was remorseful for the out-of-character offending.

Mr Robison's daughter, Emma Robison, called for a harsh penalty that would deter others from drink driving and reduce the "carnage on the roads".

"You have made my life a misery and living hell," she told Hollands, in a statement.
