The death of a Victorian teenager who doused himself in petrol then set himself alight will be subject to a coronial inquest later this year.

Kyle Ray Charles Sears, 16, died in July 2013 at the Alfred Hospital where he'd been airlifted after his self-ignition in Ballarat.

The inquest will examine how police, health and child protection services reacted after a policeman and a nurse raised concerns Kyle was being groomed for sexual abuse by his carer - a man in his 40s.

A police investigation at the time found no criminal activity had occurred.

The inquest will start on May 30 and run for four days.
