Injunction allows greyhound to race

A greyhound linked to the live baiting saga will be allowed to take part in a major qualifying race.

The Victorian Supreme Court on Friday night granted an urgent injunction, which stops Greyhound Racing Victoria blocking Awesome Project from racing in an Australian Cup heat on Saturday.

GRV introduced a law on Tuesday that prohibits suspended trainers from transferring the dogs to others who live with them.

Justice Stephen Kay heard Awesome Project was originally trained by Darren McDonald, who was suspended from the racing industry just two days before a story on ABC TV's Four Corners, which highlighted the illegal use of live baiting, went to air.

Following his suspension, Mr McDonald transferred the dog into his partner's name and it raced last weekend, placing second.

The dog was transferred on Thursday to Elizabeth Lloyd as trainer.

Mr McDonald's lawyers claim the initial transfer had already been approved by GRV before the changes, and its box had already been drawn for this weekend's Australia Cup.

The dog, owned by Brad Canty, will be able to run at The Meadows on Saturday, trained by Ms Lloyd.

Justice Kay said Mr Canty was "entirely innocent" in relation to live baiting and not allowing the dog to run would result in significant damages, including opportunities to win prizemoney and qualification in the Australian Cup final on Match 7.
