An indecent assault at the Australian Open shut down the street outside the tennis stadiums as police conducted "safety checks".

Police shut down Olympic Boulevard at Melbourne Park after a woman was indecently assaulted at the tennis by a man about 6.45pm on Wednesday.

Spectators were delayed from leaving Rod Laver Arena and Hisense arenas and were told the boulevard was closed "due to a safety issue".

"The prior and subsequent actions of the offender led to police conducting safety checks on Olympic Boulevard," police said in a statement on Thursday.

The checks were concluded about 10.30pm "with nil issues found".

No one was arrested and police say they are continuing to investigate the assault.
