Man dies in Victorian house fire

An elderly man has died in one of four fires which destroyed Victorian homes.

One fire engulfed a home in the small country town of Meeniyan late Tuesday night.

A person has been found dead but the body is yet to be formally identified, police said on Wednesday.

The Country Fire Authority earlier said an elderly man was unaccounted for and the home was fully alight when CFA crews arrived.

The South Gippsland home is one of four destroyed by fires overnight while chimney and exhaust fan blazes damaged four other houses.

A father and his two children escaped a fire which started in the blocked flue of their wood heater but their Nullawil home was destroyed.

CFA state duty officer and operations manager Rohan Luke said they are the latest in a string of serious fires, including a death at Noble Park on Sunday.

"The effects of these fires on the families involved is devastating. The loss of irreplaceable possessions and memories pales in comparison to the tragedy of losing a loved one," Mr Luke said.
