Hinch votes for first time - for himself

Derryn Hinch voted for the first time in his life on Saturday - for himself.

The journalist-turned-politician claimed victory in a Victorian Senate seat after campaigning on the need for a national public sex offenders register.

"I voted for the first time in my life yesterday. I joke and say `at last I've found someone worth voting for'," Mr Hinch told AAP on Sunday.

He launched Derryn Hinch's Justice Party in October and got the number one spot on Victoria's huge Senate ballot.

Mr Hinch said Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's decision to call a double dissolution election had played into the minor parties' hands.

"From being around the country and seeing the dissatisfaction with the majors, (Mr Turnbull) wants to get rid of eight pesky senators ... he's going to end up with 12," he said.

Mr Hinch promised to work with whoever formed government in the lower house and get much of their agenda through, but said it wouldn't go through unquestioned.

Apart from the sex offenders register, Mr Hinch said he was a strong supporter of voluntary euthanasia, and wanted a Senate inquiry into the Family Court and child welfare agencies.

He rejected suggestions he was ineligible to take office after serving time in jail.

"I'm clean, I'm eligible, I'm in, whether they like it or not," he said.

Mr Hinch also warned the major parties from going back to the polls.

"If they go back to another election, it'll be even worse, I'll get three senators up," he said.
