Radical high-tech measures to be considered for Victorian police pursuits

Technology including the ability to track a fleeing vehicle via a GPS device will be presented to Victoria Police, after 93 percent of surveyed officers said they don’t agree with the state’s pursuit policies.

An air cannon attached to the front of a police car could launch the device to latch onto any vehicle that attempts to evade officers.

The measures are designed to protect officers from the dangers of unpredictable high-speed pursuits and to track evasive vehicles more efficiently.

However, the technology is extremely expensive and if accepted, would likely take a long time to implement.

Victoria Police said they are open to considering new ideas around their pursuit policies, the Herald Sun reported.
