A quick-thinking Melbourne boy has saved his mother’s life after she suffered a stroke.

Ethan, eight, was watching a movie in bed with his mother, Merrilyn Atwood, at their Wyndham Vale home when she said she felt unwell and began slurring her words.

Ethan immediately called his step-dad, who instructed him to dial Triple Zero.

In audio of the emergency call, the brave eight-year-old can be heard remaining calm and following instructions.

“Ask her to smile,” the responder instructs Ethan, who replies that his mother can only smile on “one side.”

Ms Atwood, 31, had suffered a stroke and was rushed to Sunshine Hospital by ambulance minutes after her courageous son dialled for help.

“I’m so proud, he’s my hero. He saved my life,” she told 9NEWS this afternoon.

Two weeks after the ordeal, Ms Atwood is expected to make a full recovery.
