Man accused of stealing donations intended for Hannah McGuire's family fronts court

A man accused of stealing more than $60,000 in fundraising money meant for the family of Hannah McGuire, who was allegedly murdered by her ex-partner, has fronted court today.

Lachlan Morganti, 26, appeared in person at Ballarat Magistrates' Court for a mention, after he was charged with theft offences relating to a GoFundMe fundraiser.

The online fundraiser was quickly established on behalf of the Clunes Cricket Club, where McGuire's family is involved, which raised almost $65,000 following the death of 23-year-old McGuire.

Her body was found in a burnt-out car at Scarsdale in April, about 25 kilometres south of Ballarat.

Morganti was today supported by loved ones and family members in the courtroom.

He remained silent when asked questions by 9News.

The matter was adjourned until July 1 and his bail was extended.

Morganti denies stealing the money. He is yet to enter a plea in relation to the charges.

GoFundMe Regional Director Nicola Britton said donors would be refunded following the incident.

"We take protecting Australian generosity very seriously," she said.

"We will always make sure that donations are used as intended.GoFundMe is proactively refunding all donors in line with its GoFundMe Guarantee.

"Our team is in contact with the McGuire family, and will continue to liaise with them, and authorities, as required."

Lachlan Young, 21, has been charged with murder over McGuire's death.

Young is defending the charge and is yet to enter a plea in relation to the charge.
