Guilty plea over Vic brain-injury victim

A driver has admitted crashing into a pedestrian in Melbourne's CBD, leaving the victim partially paralysed and with a permanent brain injury.

George Maranis, 30, struck Christopher Timms as he was walking near Flagstaff Station early in the morning in February 2016.

Maranis has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing serious injury over the crash, which left Mr Timms paralysed on the left side of his body.

Mr Timms' parents were present for the guilty plea at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

"I want to acknowledge your presence today and you have my sympathies," magistrate Franz Holzer said to them.

Maranis also pleaded guilty to possessing the sedative drugs Stillnox and Diazepam.

He was suspended from driving until at least his next court appearance, despite arguing he needed his car for his work installing the National Broadband Network.

"My sole concern is community safety," Mr Holzer said.

Maranis will face a pre-sentence hearing at the County Court on February 21.
