Green energy gets green light in Victoria

More than 70 new turbines will be built at a Victorian wind farm, making it the third largest of its type in Australia.

Premier Daniel Andrews visited the Ararat wind farm on Wednesday, using the announcement to take aim at Prime Minister Tony Abbott over his renewable energy stance.

"Tony Abbott thinks wind farms are ugly - but there's nothing ugly about a clean environment and there's nothing ugly about hundreds of new Victorian jobs," Mr Andrews told reporters.

The visit comes as the coalition defends banning Clean Energy Finance Corporation funding for wind farms and roof-top solar projects, saying the $10 billion body should focus on emerging technologies.

The Ararat project, backed by a global consortium including Renewable Energy Systems, GE, Downer, Partners Group and OPTrust, will employ up to 285 workers and inject more than $7 million into the local economy over the next two years.

The farm is expected to have a life span of 25 years and will generate enough electricity to power about 123,000 households across the state.
