Global support for Fairfax journos

Journalists across the globe are standing in solidarity with Fairfax Media reporters against 125 editorial job cuts.

The International Federation of Journalists, which represents more than 600,000 journalists, heard the rallying cry and has condemned Fairfax Media's decision to slash jobs to save $30 million.

IFJ general secretary Anthony Bellanger said on their website that the Brussels-based organisation called on the Fairfax management "to take immediate steps to remedy the situation, without losing more jobs".

The International Trade Union Confederation general secretary Sharan Burrow said she was shocked by the "unilateral and deeply damaging plan" to axe jobs.

Journalists on a seven-day strike rallied on Thursday outside The Age in Melbourne and a hotel in Sydney where Fairfax chief executive Greg Hywood laid out his vision for the company.

Mr Hywood promised to keep the newspapers going despite editorial staff taking industrial action over the cuts at The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald and the Australian Financial Review.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews told reporters on Thursday he would always defend people's rights to take lawful industrial action and supported more, not fewer, voices in the media.
