Other ATAR results won't be released early

Victorian students who didn't receive their ATAR results a week early will still have to wait until Monday.

As many as 2000 Year 12 students received their results via SMS on Wednesday night - five days early - thanks to a computer meltdown.

Education officials have confirmed the results are correct but say they won't be releasing results to the other 80,000 students.

"We know it may seem unfair ... but the infrastructure and support networks required to support the full VCE cohort will not be fully available until the scheduled release at 7am, Monday 12 December," VTAC said in a statement on Thursday afternoon.

"For this reason, the published date for the official release will not change."

Hordes of students and parents took to social media on Wednesday night to say ATAR results had been sent early.

"My daughter got her ATAR results via text tonight, it's not supposed to come out til the 12th," one woman tweeted.

"What's going on? I'm too scared to see my results," one student posted.

In a brief statement to AAP late on Wednesday, Minister for Education James Merlino said: "Clearly a significant error has been made and a full investigation will be carried out to get to the bottom of this."

VTAC and the VCAA will contact schools and each of the students affected to confirm the accuracy of the information and provide further support.
