Accessing the Pill is about to get cheaper and easier in Victoria

Getting the oral contraceptive pill is about to be cheaper and easier in one state.

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan has announced the Pill will be available at local chemists without a script from July this year.

Women over the age of 18 will be able to access it at 850 participating Chemist Care Now pharmacies across the state, including in rural and remote areas.

This will make it easier and cheaper for women to access birth control in Victoria.

Previously, women needed to see a GP for a script before they could buy the Pill at a chemist or pharmacy.

Many had to pay for that GP appointment, which can take weeks to secure in some areas.

From July, they will be able to access a free pharmacist consultation at participating chemists.

The only thing they need to pay for is the Pill itself.

"Accessing contraception should not be a burden for women," Allan said in a statement.

The pharmacists delivering the new Pill service will have to complete a postgraduate training module to qualify.

They will also be required to discuss risks and other options, including long-acting reversable contraception, during a thorough consultation with women seeking the Pill.

"We're giving women more choice and helping them save time," Minister for Health Mary-Anne Thomas said.

Chemist Care Now has been providing women across the state with resupplies of existing oral contraceptive pill prescriptions since 2023.

The service has been accessed by 17,000 women in the last three years.
