Get pets bushfire-ready

THE MANY WAYS TO PREPARE FOR BUSHFIRES WHEN YOU HAVE PETS

- Have a disaster plan

- Keep photo of pet in wallet to prove ownership if you become separated

- Find out which emergency shelters accept pets

- Find a friend who lives away from the fire to look after your pet

- Store all your pet's important numbers online, such as microchip and vet's number

- Keep at least three days' supply of dry pet food, medicine and water

DOGS & CATS

- Include bedding and stress toys in their carriers

- Keep microchip details online in case records are destroyed

- Make sure their ID tags are updated and legible

- Poo bags and paper towels for cleaning up

- Extra cat litter

BIRDS

- Pack a cover to put over the cage to reduce stress

FISH

- Water for aquarium top-ups

- Transportable container labelled with contact details

- Don't feed fish in their transport containers as this could kill them

RABBITS

- Avoid cardboard or paper-based carriers

HORSES

- Pack a spade to clean up droppings

- Keep copies of medical, registration and branding records in a watertight container in case you have to put the horse in care.
