Dozens of firefighters have brought a blaze under control at the Kilmany garbage tip, 175km west of Melbourne, but it's expected burn for an "extended period of time", the CFA says.
The fire has been burning since 8am on Thursday and nearby residents are being advised to seek medical help if they are affected by the large amounts of smoke across the town.
About 30 firefighters are battling the fire and the council is also at the scene with digging machinery.
