Future uncertain for groom of child bride

A former asylum seeker jailed for marrying a 14-year-old Melbourne girl will return to immigration detention, classified stateless, once released from prison.

Mohammad Shakir, 35, cannot be deported to his native Myanmar, as he left there as a refugee and came to Australia via boat from Indonesia.

He was jailed by the County Court on Thursday and must serve another 13 days behind bars, taking into account the time he has already spent in custody.

After his release he will be sent to immigration detention. However, what will happen thereafter is unknown, Judge Lisa Hannan conceded.

Shakir pleaded guilty to marrying the girl during an Islamic ceremony at Noble Park in September, 2016.

He was jailed for 18 months but permitted release on a $2000 order after serving one year.

Given time already served, he will be freed within a fortnight and must exhibit good behaviour for six months.

The criminal prosecution is the first of its kind in Australia.
