Freak wind rips tiles off Vic homes

Freakishly strong winds have wreaked havoc on three streets in Melbourne's south east.

The State Emergency Service (SES) responded to 15 calls for assistance after wild winds tore roof tiles off homes in Keysborough.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Gina Lawrie said the damage may have been caused by a microburst, which is a very strong, very localised gust of wind.

"We've had a look at our radars and there were some showers nearby so it's very possible it was a microburst," Ms Lawrie said.

"It sounded like it was all from one street."

The blast of wind ripped through Keysborough focussing on Sylvan Avenue at approximately 7.30pm (AEST).

An SES spokeswoman said the burst was contained to three streets.

"It was a very, very small area," the spokeswoman said.

"A number of homes were damaged."
