Frank Costa appointed AO

Geelong-based Australian businessman and philanthropist Frank Costa likes the saying "the more you put in, the more you get out".

It's a mantra that will be underscored on Australia Day, when Mr Costa will be appointed an Officer (AO) in the Order of Australia.

The honour recognises Mr Costa's distinguished service to the Geelong community across the varied fields of sport, business, religion, medical, educational and social welfare organisations.

"Apart from the fact I was very surprised, I am really pleased to be nominated," Mr Costa told AAP.

"It's a very special honour to be recognised on Australia Day."

Mr Costa was president of the Geelong Football Club from 1998 to 2011, a period when the club became an AFL powerhouse and won three premierships.

His family business, Costa Group, has grown over the decades to become Australia's largest private fruit and vegetable producer, supporting up to 7000 jobs during peak season.

Behind-the-scenes community involvement has included as chair of church restoration committees, and as patron of medical institutes and the Lorne hospital.

Mr Costa was also awarded the Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia in 1997, for services to youth and the community, and the Australian Sports Medal in 2001.

Born in Geelong, Mr Costa said he felt thankful he, too, could bring up his large family in the town. He has eight daughters and 21 grandchildren.

"Unlike the size of Melbourne or Sydney there is still a strong community in Geelong," he said.

"And the more you put in, the more you get from it."
