Three men who allegedly posed as police officers to carry out several carjackings in Melbourne have faced court charged with armed robbery and possessing the drug ice.

The three were arrested in Deer Park overnight following reports armed men pretending to be police officers stopped motorists in the city and tried to steal their cars.

The men - aged 25, 29 and 32 - faced the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Wednesday charged with armed robbery, impersonating police, firearm offences, car theft, robbery, possession of ice and evading police.

The first two alleged victims were cut off by what appeared to be an undercover police vehicle in Wantirna South late on Monday night.

The two were suspicious of the dark station wagon - which had flashing blue and red lights on its dashboard - and reversed down the street before crashing, Victoria Police said on Wednesday.

A man had allegedly pointed a gun at the car, with the two fleeing, leaving behind their vehicle which couldn't be taken because of the crash.

A short time later men posing as undercover police pulled over another driver in Ferntree Gully and threatened him with a gun.

However, they were unable to start his car because it had an engine immobiliser.

After the two failed carjacking attempts another driver had his Audi sedan stolen in South Yarra around 11pm after he was approached by a man who'd climbed out of a dark-coloured Holden Commodore.
