Four Taiwanese in Vic court over ice haul

Four Taiwanese men charged over a $130 million stash of the drug ice have been remanded in custody in a Melbourne court.

About 135kg of the illegal drug was found packed into four suitcases at an inner-city apartment on Tuesday.

Shu Yi Lin, 20, and Li Ping Chen, 23, were both charged with possessing a commercial quantity of ice suspected of being illegally imported.

Chun Lan, 28, and Ming Hsuan Ou, 23, were each charged with trafficking a commercial quantity of the drug.

Their brief hearing in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday was told the men were in Australia on tourist visas and have no fixed address in the country.

They were arrested in a joint operation between the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the Australian Crime Commission.

Police were still investigating if the drugs came from overseas or were manufactured in Australia, AFP commander Bruce Giles told reporters on Wednesday.

The drug haul would have equated to about 1.3 million street deals, at a value of around $130 million, police believe.

The men face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment on the charges.

They were remanded in custody to face court in November.
