Forgotten WWI digger remembered

He lay in an unmarked Melbourne grave for almost 90 years, but World War I digger Thomas Marcellus Boyle will be recognised when a plaque is laid on his final resting place.

The RSL of Australia will conduct a Dedication Service for the former veteran's recently restored grave at the Cheltenham Pioneer Cemetery on Friday.

Gunner Boyle fought along the Western Front and is believed to have taken part in the breaking of the Hindenburg Line, the German army's final defence.

He returned home after the war in 1919 but died seven years later, in 1926.

The service, which begins at 11am, will follow a commemoration ceremony marking 150 years of the cemetery.
