Vic on flood watch as rain, winds continue

The worst of Victoria's wild weather might not be over, with drivers urged to be careful on flooded roads as rain and strong winds continue to batter the state.

A severe weather warning for damaging winds has been issued across much of Victoria on Monday evening following heavy rain and thunderstorms which resulted in flash flooding earlier in the day.

The SES says it received 320 calls about flash flooding, falling trees and damaged buildings between midnight and 4pm on Monday afternoon.

The calls include reports of flooded buildings across Geelong and Melbourne, and images from social media show leaking ceilings at Monash University and roads deluged in Melbourne's CBD.

The low-pressure trough from the southwest brought strong winds and heavy rain to metropolitan areas late in the morning.

But the risk of further storms and flooding is expected to contract to Victoria's northeast.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a flood watch message for northeast Victoria, including the Upper Murray, Mitta Mitta, Kiewa, Ovens and King Catchments, as well as the Goulburn and Broken Basins.

Damaging winds are expected in the northeast, west, and south and east Gippsland districts during Monday evening - with gusts of up to 120km/h forecast for alpine areas, the BoM says.

This is expected to continue in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

There's also a gale warning on for Port Phillip, Western Port, West Coast, Central Coast, Central Gippsland Coast and East Gippsland Coast on Tuesday.

On Monday, Ballarat and Mount William experienced gusts of 82km/h, with winds of 113km/h recorded at Mt Hotham.
