Melb attack victim 'didn't see it coming'

The victim of an unprovoked bashing outside a Melbourne nightclub believes his attackers were looking for a fight.

Corey, who doesn't want to reveal his last name, was queuing to enter a King Street nightclub after 2am on Sunday when he was attacked by two men.

The 22-year-old on Wednesday said he was at the back of the line with friends when he was shoved by one of his attackers.

When Corey asked why he'd been jostled the man turned on him.

"He just looks back at me and gives me this biggest glare - I've never seen anyone that angry before - I turned around and calmly said what are you being aggressive for, and then (I was) smacked and thrown into the ropes," the 22-year-old said.

Another man then joined in the attack and Corey was head butted and punched in the face.

"I didn't see it coming whatsoever," he said of the assault which left him with a broken nose, fractured eye socket and concaved cheek bone.

"They were two blokes who had too much aggression and wanted to take it out. They targeted me," Corey told reporters.

"They were obviously looking for someone."

Constable Richard Bower says the unprovoked attack was vicious and swift.

He said one of the men involved was in a minor scuffle some 50 metres up the road before he attacked Corey.

"Reviewing the (CCTV) footage, the body language and the way it started, it does appear these people may have potentially been looking for victims," Const Bower said of the two attackers who were with three other friends.

Police are searching for the five men - two of whom were wearing Jimmy Royale-branded shirts - aged in their early 20s.
