First members chosen for Vic treaty body

The first two members of the First Peoples' Assembly have been selected as Victoria's indigenous treaty process continues.

Marcus Steward from Taungurung Land and Waters Council and Damien Bell from Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation were announced as its first members on Saturday.

The representatives were chosen from 60 candidates, with nine seats left to be filled.

The group will become the voice for Aboriginal communities in the Victorian treaty process, with 11 seats reserved for formally recognised traditional owner groups and 21 seats for members statewide.

Aboriginal community members will vote to elect the remaining statewide seats between September 16 and October 20.

Treaty Advancement Commissioner Jill Gallagher said the process is inclusive of everyone in the Aboriginal community.

"It's too early to say what Treaties might include. But I believe things like truth telling, reparations for the past, and strengthening our cultures will all be part of the conversation. And we want everyone to be part of that conversation," Ms Gallagher said.
