Firearms have been seized from a Melbourne home after Australian Border Force officers identified machine gun parts sent in the mail.

The 36-year-old man was arrested in Richmond on Wednesday following a search of his home, which uncovered a replica sub-machine gun and parts of a light machine gun.

He then accompanied police to Yea where a second search warrant was executed resulting in the seizure of eight registered firearms.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Kelly Grindley says there are no indications the man's activity is associated to terrorism or other forms of organised crime.

He was charged with importing a prohibited item and bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on March 15.

Police also suspended his shooters licence.
