Fire still burning on Vic livestock ship

Water, inert gases and other fire suppression techniques are being used to try to put out a blaze in a feed silo on a livestock ship off the Victorian coast.

Fire crews were called to the livestock carrier in Portland, on Victoria's southwest coast, on Tuesday night.

A silo filled with 800 tonnes of pelletised stock feed caught fire on the ship, which had no livestock on board at the time.

The Awassi Express is still alight, despite suppression activities including the use of inert gases, water and other suppression mediums into the silo.

Firefighters have had to work in confined spaces in a bid to put out the blaze.

The Port of Portland operations have not been affected by the fire and business continues as normal.
