Fire damages multi-million dollar historic Melbourne home

Fire has damaged an historic Melbourne home which sold for $2.4 million last year.

Firefighters were called to the scene on Black Street, in the beach-side suburb of Brighton, about 7.45pm.

Images show flames and smoke spewing from the roof of Spurling House, at 38 Black Street.

The two-storey home is architect John Horbury Hunt’s only known Victorian building, according to Heritage Council Victoria’s website.

It was built in 1888 and is “of architectural and historical significance to the state of Victoria”, the website states.

The home fetched $2.4 million last year, and earlier traded at $180,000 in 1981, according to real estate website Property Observer. 

Paramedics attended the scene but there were no patients, an Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said. 

Black Street was closed to traffic but the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) has since given the all clear, according to an MFB statement.
