Fears bomber could be freed from Vic jail

Community safety should be the priority in any parole application from the Russell Street bomber, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews says.

Fears have been raised that Craig Minogue could apply for bail as early as next year.

Mr Andrews said he was confident the Adult Parole Board would make the right decision, should Minogue make an application for an early prison release.

"They will, I'm sure, at all times make sure that community safety will be the number one priority," Mr Andrews told reporters on Monday.

Minogue was sentenced in 1988 to life in jail, and a minimum of 28 years, for bombing Melbourne's police headquarters.

One police officer was killed, and 22 were injured, in the bombing in 1986.

Former Victoria Police investigator Gary Ayres told News Corp Australia he was "alarmed" to learn Minogue could soon walk free from prison.

Minogue is expected to make a case for parole based on his clean prison record for the past 20 years.
