Teen dead, two critical after Vic crash

A 15-year-old driver is dead and two of his passengers are fighting for their lives after a crash in Melbourne that police say could have killed all five in the car.

Tributes are flowing on social media for the driver, Luke Lee - described as a happy and caring teen.

The unlicensed driver died at the scene after he lost control of the car on Oldfield Road in Sunshine West about 10pm on Monday.

Two girls, aged 13 and 16, travelling in the back seat were trapped in the wreckage and are in critical condition in The Alfred Hospital with head injuries.

Two other boys, aged 16 and 17, are also in hospital with serious injuries.

"We've got two of these kids still fighting for life ... it could have been five people dead last night," Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer told reporters on Tuesday.

"We've had one young boy die ... so, let that be a message to those out there listening.

"Driving is not a game. You need to be licensed. You need to be responsible."

Investigators believe inexperience and speed were factors in the crash.

A number of the teens in the unregistered 1995 Holden Commodore weren't wearing seatbelts.

Lee's girlfriend, Katelyn Debono, took to Instagram to express her sadness that their last words to each other were in anger.

"No words could ever explain how much you really mean to me and how much I will miss you and forever love you, we've been through so much together and I'm so upset that our last words to each other was us fighting ," she posted.

Others have told of their sadness at hearing of his death.

"We were only talking the other day, I can't believe this has happened," one friend posted online.

"Fly high," another wrote on Facebook.

Flowers and notes have been placed at the crash site in Melbourne's west.
