Fat people more likely to have fat dogs

Is your puppy fat? Then the chances are you are too.

That's the latest finding from a research paper into chubby pooches and the lifestyles of their owners.

Fat dog owners spoil their pets more often and are more likely to underestimate their dog's weight, Dr Peter Sande from the University of Copenhagen said during a lecture in Melbourne.

"Overfeeding in companion animals is related to a form of attachment where the animal is seen as an equal, and deserves all the treats and indulgences an owner gives themselves," Dr Sande said.

Fat dog owners are also less likely to walk their furry friend to burn off the kilojoules from all those extra treats.

Vets say people feel guilted by those big brown eyes and offer food treats instead of other rewards like cuddles or walks and games.

"A dog shouldn't look like a coffee table," Dr Leonie Richards from the University of Melbourne said.

"You should be able to see a waistline, see the ribs and feel the backbone, and that applies to all breeds."
