A Melbourne family is devastated after a fire tore through their home in the city's south-east overnight, killing their beloved pets.

Fire crews were called to the single-storey property on Sylvander Street in Clayton South just after 7.30pm following reports of explosions.

Upon arrival the crew found the house on fire and called for additional resources.

The Metropolitan Fire Brigade and Country Fire Authority were able to contain the fire to part of the home within 30 minutes, preventing its spread to neighbouring buildings.

Most of the building was destroyed by the fire, which firefighters believe started in the garage area.

No one was injured in the fire, however the family’s pets are understood to have perished in the blaze.

A building surveyor is expected to visit the scene later today to assess the damage.

Police and paramedics remain on scene and are assisting the fire crews.
