Family distances themselves from Lawyer X

The high-profile family of Nicola Gobbo, including her uncle and former Victorian governor Sir James Gobbo, have distanced themselves from the supergrass.

In a statement released on Friday and with the unveiling of Ms Gobbo's identity after years of secrecy, the family says they knew nothing of the scandal.

"As a family, we have been disturbed by the revelations leading to the establishment of a royal commission," the statement read on ABC News says.

"No members of our immediate family have seen or spoken to Nicola in many years and have no knowledge of the matters to be investigated or her actions.

"Given that we know nothing about the issues and have had no contact with Nicola we ask that you respect our privacy, particularly of Sir James and Lady Gobbo."

A court order suppressing Ms Gobbo's identity was lifted on Friday afternoon.

Her unmasking followed concerns a royal commission into police use of legal figures as informers - including murdered lawyer Joe Acquaro - would be hindered if she could not be named.
