Fallen Victorian police officers honoured

Victorian police will honour the lives of fallen colleagues Gary Silk and Rodney Miller, shot and killed during a late-night stake out at Moorabin in Melbourne's southeast 19 years ago.

A memorial service for the slain pair will be held at Prahran Police Station on Wednesday at 10am.

Armed robbers Bandali Debs and Jason Joseph Roberts were sentenced to life in prison for their murders in 2003.

Sergeant Silk and Senior Constable Miller, who were investigating a series of hold-ups at the time, were gunned down at close range outside the Silky Emperor Restaurant on August 16, 1998.

The midnight attack sent shock waves through the force.

Superintendent Philip Green says the annual service will honour the memory of the two men and their contribution to policing.

"Each year we join the families to pay tribute to them to ensure their legacy lives on," Supt Green said.

"Words can never explain the pain felt by their families to whom I convey our sympathies on behalf of Victoria Police and the community."

The annual Silk-Miller Cup, a friendly football match between police members, will take place at a local ground later on Wednesday.

Entry proceeds will be donated to the Blue Ribbon Foundation which supports community projects in memory of officers killed in the line of duty.
