Fake school teacher jailed in Victoria

A brazen conman with legitimate civil engineering and accounting qualifications has been jailed for using fake documents to work as a school teacher for a decade across Victoria.

Julian Richard Taylor worked in areas including maths and physics during his classroom act, leaving County Court Judge David Brookes perplexed about why a man of such education would follow such a path.

The 52-year-old even had a diploma of secondary education from Monash University.

Despite his studies, Taylor was found guilty of four charges of using false documents, seven counts of obtaining financial advantage by deception and one charge each of perjury and making, using or supplying identity information.

On Tuesday, Judge Brookes said the offending was lengthy, brazen, sophisticated and was done to mask prior criminal history.

"You showed a complete absence of remorse," he said to Taylor.

"Your offending cannot stand."

Between 2005 and 2015, the fraudulent teacher worked at schools including Ilim College at Dallas, Hamilton and Alexandra College at Hamilton, St Paul's Anglican Grammar School at Warragul and Traralgon College.

Taylor had previously been convicted of other dishonesty offences and was sentenced to eight years in prison for a range of offences including falsifying tax returns.

Judge Brookes jailed Taylor for two years and 11 months, with a non-parole period period of two years and two months. He has already served 752 days of pre-sentence detention.

"Your prospects of rehabilitation are guarded," the judge told Taylor.
