Police are searching for a car that has damage to its bonnet or windscreen after an elderly man was struck in a hit-and-run crash in Melbourne's east.

The 81-year-old man is in a serious but stable condition after he was struck by a dark coloured SUV or 4WD as he crossed Rose Street in Box Hill on Saturday night.

The vehicle, described as looking "shiny and new", did not stop after hitting the man and police say it may have damage to the front or bonnet area and the windscreen.
