Vic school fraud co-accused pleads guilty

A relative of a former Victorian education department official accused of siphoning off millions of taxpayer dollars has pleaded guilty over his role in the alleged scheme.

Daniel Calleja pleaded guilty in Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Tuesday to attempting to pervert the course of justice and obtaining property by deception.

Calleja was originally charged with 106 offences, while co-accused and alleged mastermind Nino Napoli faces 152 charges, including conspiracy to defraud, following an investigation by the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission.

Prosecutors dropped 104 charges against Calleja, who has been ordered not to contact Napoli or any of his co-accused as part of his bail conditions.

He must also surrender his passport and is forbidden from leaving Australia.

Calleja will appear before the Victorian County Court for a plea hearing on August 30.
