Driver rescued from car wreck following collision with Melbourne tram

A Melbourne man is in a critical condition after his car collided with a tram on Swan Street in Burnley this afternoon.

The man, aged in his 30s, was trapped in the mangled car for more than 30 minutes while emergency services worked to free him.

He sustained serious upper body injuries when his car hit the tram just after 2pm.

The passengers and driver of the tram were not injured in the collision.

The driver of the car was taken to The Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident, while trams are being diverted to Bridge Road in both directions.
