Police said the man lost control of his car before it rolled and hit a fence, and he was thrown from the driver's seat as it veered down a valley.

He died at the scene and is yet to be identified.

Police have established a crime scene and believe the car was travelling at high speed.

"Speed is definitely a factor, the vehicle itself was stolen earlier in the evening," Senior Sergeant Cam Hunt said.

"The vehicle was stolen locally from within the Yarra Ranges."

Investigations continue.

The Victorian road toll now stands at 139, which is 17 more than for the same period last year.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
