Hammer attack after car crash in Melbourne

A driver has been attacked with a hammer, bashed, then kicked in the head after a minor car crash in Melbourne.

Specialist armed robbery Taskforce Embona is investigating after two men rear-ended the Mount Waverley man's car on Manningham Road in Bulleen some time between 1am and 2am on Monday.

The 25-year-old victim was attacked after he drove to a side street and got out of his car to exchange details after the crash.

One offender hit the victim's forehead with a hammer before the victim was restrained and punched in the face several times.

The victim collapsed and was unable to respond when one of the men demanded his keys and wallet and then kicked him in the back of the head.

The pair then took the wallet and got back into their own car.

Paramedics took the victim to the Austin Hospital in a stable condition.
