Two dogs stolen by a heartless car thief in Melbourne have been returned to their owner.

Good Samaritan Bobby Psaila said he offered a drunk man a ride home from St Albans early on Friday morning before the thief stole his ute with Staffordshire terriers Sparkie and Dozzer inside.

"I woke up to some noise at 3am (and) this guy was drunk out front of my mum's house," Mr Psaila wrote on Facebook.

"He kept making noise. I offered him a ride home and put my dogs in the back because I didn't want them to fight or make noise when I left.

"I drove him to an address that he told me and when I got out of the car to check (the) house number he drove off with my dogs."

Sparkie was reunited with Mr Psaila within hours while Doozer was located on Friday afternoon.

Police remain on the lookout for the stolen gold ute with a cab.
