Dog saved from suspicious apartment fire

Firefighters have rescued a trapped dog from a fire at a Melbourne apartment block.

Emergency services were called to the fire at McBain Street, Altona, block about 10.35pm yesterday.

Two of the buidling’s four units were found fully engulfed in flames and in danger of collapse.

The blaze soon spread to a third unit, with fears an occupant was trapped.

“We did an extensive search and we were unable to find anyone,” Commander Roger Chitty from the Metropolitan Fire Brigade said.

Fire crews worked for an hour to control the fire, and rescued a dog from one of the units.

The blaze has since been deemed suspicious, with investigations underway.
