Derailed Vic train removed from site

Rail services to the Victorian centre of Warrnambool should resume within days after last week's derailment.

A V/Line Warrnambool-bound locomotive and four carriages derailed after hitting a truck on a Pirron Yallock rail crossing on Wednesday.

Nineteen people were hospitalised, including the truck driver who had serious injuries.

The train was expected to be put on a temporary track on Sunday evening, to be sent to Melbourne for inspection and repairs.

Two heavy cranes anchored by more than 5000 tonnes of rock were brought in to lift the train onto the temporary track built alongside the Warrnambool line.

V/Line is writing to passengers letting them know of reimbursement and counselling services.

Coaches are replacing the Warrnambool services from Geelong.
