Defence jobs and ice on COAG agenda

Defence jobs, action on the drug ice and family violence will lead Victoria's agenda at a meeting of Australian governments.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews will push the case for local content in defence contracts at the Council of Australian Governments meeting in Canberra on Friday.

"I'm going to raise defence procurement, trying to get a local content target into that, so when the Land 400 (combat vehicle) gets built at least a big, strong percentage of it gets built here," Mr Andrews said on Thursday.

"I hope we're also going to have a discussion about why do you have a Grants Commission if you're just going to set aside the independent umpire's verdict whenever you don't like it."

Mr Andrews said he would offer Victoria's expertise on methamphetamine, or ice, to Prime Minister Tony Abbott's national ice taskforce.

"There's no point people just doing the same work twice," he said.

Australian of the Year Rosie Batty will also speak to the premiers and prime minister about family violence on Friday morning.
